Then D found his future profession at the GLFD event, where he got to ride a fire truck through town, watch a demonstration of the jaws of life, and  . . . .

 . . . spray a real live fire hose!!

Very exciting. The helmet has not come off since. In fact, he discovered that if he turns it so the long part is in front, he can still wear it in his car seat. D later informed us later that he wants to be a fireman "and cut up vehicles, too!"
